For this project, the goal was to design a new record cover for German musician Nils Frahm’s album Spaces. As a class, were asked to listen to the album and develop our own interpretation of the cover design with one key requirement: the final piece had to incorporate a multimedia approach, rather than relying solely on digital design.
My process began with collage work, mostly using magazine clippings I had on hand to experiment with different compositions. Once I had a few layouts I liked, I photographed each one and brought them into Photoshop to manipulate them further. The final design became a more abstract, depth-distorting image that, to me, reflects the layered and textured nature of Frahm’s music throughout the album.
Shown here are some of the original collages I created for the project. By layering cutouts in the physical compositions and then multiplying and deconstructing them digitally, I was able to create a sense of visual depth that captures the feeling of listening to Nils Frahm’s work.
